A few weeks ago I was reading a book about Yanomamis, and an excerpt that I found very interesting was about how shamans use their dreams to see a world that “ordinary” people don’t see. Then he talks about a creature that brings diseases and I became obsessed with his description. I made a bunch of sketches on paper, and yesterday I made a digital version… Here’s the excerpt of the book I was reading and my “concept art” of the creature:
“What we call xawara are measles, flu, malaria, tuberculosis (…) we shamans also see in them the image of the spirits of the epidemic, which we call xawarari. These evil beings look like white people, dressed in clothes, glasses and hats, but they are enveloped in thick smoke and have sharp fangs.”
